Cinema To The Letter

For each episode of a film mini-series topic, we cover six films that fit a C for Classic, I for Indie, N for New, E for Egregious, M for Masterpiece and A for Atypical. Who doesn’t love an acronym?

22: Pontypool of the Dead
Tuesday Oct 02, 2018
Tuesday Oct 02, 2018
When the double bill theater is full, the dead will walk the lobby. On the first of several horror themed episodes for the month of October, Double Edge Double Bill is doing a twofor of zombie films. Joining hosts Adam Thomas and Thomas Mariani this week is special guest Lance Langford from The Horror Returns Podcast! The trio's good feature this week is 2009's Pontypool, an underrated gem of the sub genre in which a shock jock DJ comes face to face with zombies who are turned by way of the English language. Then, their bad feature is the late great George A. Romero's less-than-great 2008 film Diary of the Dead. A found footage zombie film that dares to ask "How unlikeable and unengaging can we make our protagonists?" Sink your teeth into the latest episode to find out!

21: Burt Reynolds In Deliverance From Striptease
Tuesday Sep 25, 2018
Tuesday Sep 25, 2018
On September 6th 2018, the world lost a movie star. A Florida legend. A master of the moustache. Burt Reynolds was a massive icon who had a long storied career filled with high highs and low lows. So, with honor and respect, Adam Thomas and Thomas Mariani examine both sides of that coin on the latest Double Edged Double Bill. First is our good feature Deliverance, the 1972 classic that launched Reynolds' career. Then we take a gander at our bad feature the 1996 ensemble comedy Striptease, which came and went during Burt's decline. So, sit on your bearskin rug with a Coors and listen here to this retrospective on a true icon.

20: Jonah Hex and the Hostiles of the West
Wednesday Sep 19, 2018
Wednesday Sep 19, 2018
Yee-haw! It's time for another rootin' tootin episode of the Double Edged Double Bill! Our topic for this week is westerns and did we rustle up some varmints to cover for it. First up is the steampunk western DC comics adaptation Jonah Hex, which makes Wild Wild West look like The Searchers by comparison. Then, last year's Hostiles, a quiet contemplative western with a star studded cast that examines the frontier's relationship with Native Americans that's just as good as it is frustrating. So get ready to rustle up this episode and put it in your earbuds here, ya yellow bellied cow pie! Other western slang!

19: Predator 2: Alien Boogaloo
Tuesday Sep 11, 2018
Tuesday Sep 11, 2018
If it bleeds, we can double bill it. In honor of The Predator coming this week, Double Edged Double Bill is doing an episode all about the Predator franchise with special guest Yonathan Habtemichael. First up is our good feature Predator 2, which our crew mostly defends as an underrated follow up to the massively popular original film. Then, the underwhelming first attempt at Alien Vs Predator is our second feature. Yet, one person gets in a few defensive punches for it. Who is this mystery hero? Listen here and get ready to laugh all the way to the jungle... or the city... or the ancient underground pyramid. Wherever your prime hunting destination may be!

18: Indiana Jones and the Last Shock Treatment
Tuesday Sep 04, 2018
Tuesday Sep 04, 2018
In this 18th entry for the Double Edged Double Bill franchise, we are covering sequels! Specifically, Adam Thomas and Thomas Mariani are going for two very different concepts of a sequel. First, the highly regarded second sequel in the Indiana Jones series, The Last Crusade. Then, the mostly obscure & vague-sorta-sequel to Rocky Horror Picture Show known as Shock Treatment. One film is regarded as one of the best sequels of all time while the other is an incredibly prescient mess. Which is which? Listen to have all the answers revealed!

17: The Killing of The Spirit of Film Noir
Tuesday Aug 28, 2018
Tuesday Aug 28, 2018
Out of the shadows and fog comes a new episode of Double Edged Double Bill! This week, Adam Thomas and Thomas Mariani are covering the genre of noir! Our good feature is the 1956 Stanley Kubrick film The Killing while the bad feature is the 2008 neo-noir comic book adaptation from legendary comic book writer/artist gone bad Frank Miller called The Spirit. Joining our two intrepid detectives is a mysterious man of questionable motives Torrey Depina! Together, this trio will crack the big questions of this case. Did The Killing create the creepy clown mask? Why does The Spirit feature Nokia phone product placement? Is Frank Miller able to write a decent female character anymore? Put this episode in your trench coat pocket and find out!

16: Muppets From America
Tuesday Aug 21, 2018
Tuesday Aug 21, 2018
Time to play the music and light the lights! In honor of Happytime Murders coming out this week, Double Edged Double Bill is doing a double feature all about puppet films. First up is our good feature Team America: World Police from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. This satire of Jerry Bruckheimer action flicks & post-9/11 politics is one of the more memed puppet productions out there, but does the satire still hold as solidly as it did 16 years ago? Then, the duo blasts off for Muppets From Space, the movie that killed the theatrical Muppets films for a decade. Is it out of this world or does it feel like a stuck up where the sun don't shine? Listen here to find out!

15: Steve Martin Is L.A. Bilko
Tuesday Aug 14, 2018
Tuesday Aug 14, 2018
Steve Martin is a comedic icon. An accomplished actor, stand up, writer and musician, Stephen Glenn Martin has brought the world so much joy and humor over the last several decades. So in honor of his 73rd birthday today, Thomas and Adam are devoting an episode of Double Edged Double Bill to him! First up is his 1991 feature L.A. Story, which was written by and stars Martin as a middle aged weatherman getting out of his depressive funk in the City of Angels and meeting the love of his life. Then, Martin's 1996 paycheck gig Sgt. Bilko which... may have been better than the title of the podcast would lead on. All this plus rumination on the late Phil Hartman, a plethora of cameos and the reveal of why this isn't a video podcast. Listen to these wild and crazy guys talk about it here!

14: Dagon Vs Orca - A Sea Creature Double Feature
Tuesday Aug 07, 2018
Tuesday Aug 07, 2018
The seven seas bring many a creature from the depths. Whether it's the Old Ones with tentacle features or a killer whale with vengeance on its mind, the oceans breed many an unsettling monster for us humans to face. Yes, in honor of The Meg, Double Edged Double Bill is doing a good old fashioned Sea Creature Double Feature. Adam Thomas and Thomas Mariani first contend with is Stuart Gordon's Dagon, an HP Lovecraft adaptation that brings on the spooky atmosphere and ghastly wet horrors from the deep. Then, the infamous 1977 Jaws rip off Orca. Basically, it's Moby Dick if the whale was Captain Ahab and the monster was an asshole fisherman played by Richard Harris. If you're confused, don't worry. They'll be plenty of whale exposition from Charlotte Rampling to catch you up to speed. Sit back and listen to a whale of a tale now!

Tuesday Jul 31, 2018
Tuesday Jul 31, 2018
Like a bolt out of the blue, our Disney episode is here for you! Thomas Mariani and Adam Thomas are joined for a new Double Edged Double Bill of Disney films by special guest Heather Thomas, Adam's wife! Our first film is 1990's The Rescuers Down Under, the gorgeously animated sequel that is definitely the least talked about film of the Disney Renaissance. Then, our trio journeys into the post-Renaissance era with Atlantis: The Lost Empire, the animated equivalent of a massive blockbuster. Both movies have their fans, but one person on the show isn't really a fan of either. Listen to find out!
